Navigating and Sharing on the Wiki

Page history last edited by Mallory Burton 12 years, 7 months ago

This page is intended to provide you with information on how to use a wiki and share information online using the wiki.

Wikis In Plain English

Is a great video showing what a wiki is and how it is used.

To navigate to the front page of the wiki, click the "wiki" tab or the title of the wiki, e.g. kurzweilonline or BC UDL.
You can also click FrontPage on the top right of any page to return to the front page.  You can also use the back button on your browser to return to the previous page.
In order to make comments or add content to the wiki, you will need to request access in the upper right hand corner of the main page.  One of the current wiki administrators will approve you as a writer.  If you already have an account, you will need to sign in.
Every page has two tabs...View and Edit.  Click the edit tab to add or modify content on the wiki.  All previous versions of every page are stored, so even if you completely destroy a page a former version can be easily retrieved.  Don't worry about wrecking anything!  Once you're a member, click on the Edit Tab above and type away in the practice space below.  You'll soon discover that typing on a wiki page is just like typing in an ordinary document.

Add text.

Use the text colour and background colour tabs to select a colour and type text on this page in different colours and fonts.  Add all your text before you add any formatting because it's very difficult to get back to plain text.

Create a Link.  Type some text and select it.  Click the Links Tool in the toolbar above (looks like a globe with chain).  A little box will open up for you to choose the type of link (an existing wiki page, a new page, url, email) and then either choose the page to link to or type/paste in the url or email.  You can also create a new page in this way.

Add a downloadable resource directly to your page:

In Edit Mode, click the Images and Files tab in the Right-Hand panel.  Click Upload Files and browse to a file on your computer.  Once the uploaded file appears in the list, place your cursor where you would like the resource to go and click on the file name in the Images and Files Tab.  The downloadable file and its title will be inserted.  Or, type and select the text you want to link the file to and then click the file name in the Images and Files Tab.

Embed a video, Voice Thread, or photo that is already online:

Use the Insert Plugin Tool in the toolbar.  You can usually just copy the code from YouTube, Voice Thread, Flicker, or Picasa and paste it right on the wiki in Edit Mode.  When you return to View Mode, you'll see the visual.

Manage your files online:

Click on "Pages and Files" in the upper right-hand corner.  You'll be able to move your files and folders.  Only admin can delete files, so ask your team leader to delete files or promote you to admin.

Everything that you wanted to know about a wiki and more can be found in the PB Works Manual.  Click on any of the links to get started collaborating and sharing online.
