Kurzweil Mini Tutorials

Page history last edited by Mallory Burton 10 years, 6 months ago

NEWAll of the videos are now housed at the main SET-BC Learning Centre.  http://www.setbc.org/setbc/access/kurzweil3000v13_mini_tutorials.html

These tutorials were created in collaboration with info-tech/grade 6 teacher Rod H. to use with middle school students.  Anne D. developed the checklist format on a previous project.  The basic print tutorials are just one page and the video exactly follows the print tutorial.

Teaching Strategies and Kurzweil

Kurzweil Bookmark Feature:

The Prince Rupert team from the UDL project created a lesson in which they used the bookmarking feature of Kurzweil to teach the entire class how to identify chapter subheadings with bookmarks. The teacher uses the SMARTBoard to demonstrate this activity.  As the teacher creates the bookmarks in Kurzweil from the chapter sub-headings, the class highlights them with coloured markers on paper copies of the chapter. Then they use the bookmark list to figure out where the answers to the chapter review questions are likely to be found.

Susan Augustine's Excellence in Writing Strategy and Kurzweil:

At Pineridge, several teachers are using the Excellence in Writing Program so Sheryl and I sat down to figure out how to use Kurzweil in conjunction with this strategy.  Basically, students read a sentence and then choose three key words from that sentence which represent its content.  Later they construct sentences which they combine into a paragraph from their key words.  The two videos show two different ways to use Kurzweil for this strategy.

Mr. Mackey's Current Events pages:

At PRMS students are using a set of currents events pages and questions.  These 3 videos provide some tips for working with these files.  Topics include:

Tips for reading the Current Events articles (covers Read Button and hot key, voice, speed, mode and unit, page navigation, highlighting notes)

Tips for answering the Current Events questions (covers how to switch back and forth between the article and the questions or display both documents side by side, how to add text notes one by one or all at once to write answers on the pages, how to move or delete text notes)

How to fix up the reading order in these files (for teachers only)
